How Can Local Businesses Get Found in AI Search in 2026?

Alec Mladenovic • October 14, 2026

Local businesses can improve their readiness for AI search by making their services clear, maintaining accurate business information, publishing useful first-hand content, and ensuring their websites are accessible to search systems. No strategy guarantees a recommendation, but these steps create a stronger foundation for discovery.

For Windsor and Essex County businesses, the goal is practical: help potential customers find reliable information when they ask Google Gemini, ChatGPT, or any other LLM's about local services.

1. Understand What AI Visibility Actually Means

AI visibility describes how your business or content appears in AI-generated answers. However, appearances can take different forms:

  • Mention: Your business is named.
  • Citation: Your webpage is linked as a supporting source.
  • Recommendation: Your business is suggested for a particular need.
  • Visit: Someone follows a link to your website.

These outcomes should be measured separately. A mention does not necessarily produce a visit, and a citation does not always endorse your business.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) describe work aimed at improving answer-based discovery. For Google’s AI features, established SEO practices remain relevant.

2. Make Your Services and Local Business Details Clear

Start with the information customers need to decide whether you can help them.

Each important service page should explain what you offer, who it suits, where you provide it, and how to enquire. Include pricing or factors affecting cost where useful, along with genuine limitations.

For example, a Windsor contractor offering residential repairs and commercial maintenance should explain those services separately rather than relying on a broad “we do everything” statement.

Keep your business name, telephone number, website, hours, and location information accurate across your website and relevant listings. Maintain an appropriate Google Business Profile setup.

Our local SEO services support this work by strengthening service relevance and the wider local search foundation.

3. Publish Evidence That Adds Something Original

Give readers information that reflects your actual experience.

Useful material might include:

  • Project photographs with an explanation of the work.
  • Service comparisons based on real customer needs.
  • Answers to questions raised during estimates.
  • Case studies with dates, methods, and supported results.

An exterior-cleaning company could explain why it selected a particular method for a local property. A retailer could describe how customers compare fit or materials in-store.

Google’s guidance emphasizes original, useful content rather than generic summaries. Write clearly, explain unfamiliar terms, and answer questions directly without forcing every page into a rigid format. Build recognition through genuine reviews, relevant associations, and independent local or industry coverage. Avoid manufactured mentions or promising that every backlink will create AI visibility.

4. Check Whether Search Systems Can Access Your Website

Helpful content needs to be discoverable.

Use Search Console to inspect important pages. Check for accidental indexing restrictions, incorrect preferred URLs, broken internal links, and content that search systems cannot access. Google’s AI-search eligibility also requires appropriate indexing and snippet availability. Review the property’s Search generative AI control where applicable.

Other platforms have their own access rules. OpenAI distinguishes OAI-SearchBot, used for search discovery, from GPTBot, associated with model training. Allowing training is not a prerequisite for allowing search crawling. Your developer or hosting provider should check relevant crawler access and security settings. Do not assume that an accessible page guarantees inclusion or recommendation.

5. Apply What Changed in 2026

Several developments help businesses separate useful work from outdated advice.

Google published expanded generative-search optimization guidance in May 2026. It emphasizes established SEO foundations, distinctive content, and clear technical access. Google also retired FAQ rich results in May. Frequently asked questions can still help customers, but FAQ markup should not be sold as a shortcut to expanded Google listings.

Google also says special AI markup and llms.txt files are unnecessary for visibility in its search features. Something to note though: That guidance is specific to Google. It's unclear as of late 2026 if other services may use different systems. Hence, a rule of thumb is to use accurate structured data where appropriate, supported by information customers can see on the page.

6. Measure Progress Across Platforms and Business Outcomes

Create a baseline before making substantial changes.

Google’s generative-AI performance report provides impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Where sufficient data is available, review which pages receive exposure and how that changes over time. Impressions are not enquiries. Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance reporting covers citations across supported Microsoft and partner experiences. Its June 2026 preview expansion added topics, intents, citation share, and period comparisons.

Alongside platform reports, monitor:

  • Identifiable AI referral visits and website conversions.
  • Enquiries where customers mention an AI recommendation.
  • Whether answers describe your services and location accurately.
  • A consistent sample of relevant local prompts.

Repeat prompt checks and record dates, platforms, wording, and location assumptions. You'll learn very quickly that answers can change between runs. Treat these tests as observations of a sample, rather than a complete measure of everyone’s search experience.

7. Turn the Findings Into an Action Plan

An AI visibility audit should produce a practical account of what was checked, what appeared, and what needs improvement.

Useful findings include missing services, incorrect business details, inaccessible pages, competitors appearing in sampled answers, and gaps in supporting evidence. Recommendations should distinguish technical fixes from longer-term content and recognition work.
